Walking in Essex

Welcome to the East Essex Friends Website

 ramblers at fuller street 2

East Essex Friends is part of the Ramblers who do short walks over distances of 4 – 5 miles covering the whole of the county and we are always delighted to welcome new members.

Walks are arranged twice a week on Wednesdays and Saturdays on a year round basis. All walks start at 10:30am and finish between 12:30pm and 1:00pm . Programmes are issued 3 times a year, each covering a 4 monthly period and details can be seen on this website. On most occasions we start and finish at a pub where we can pre-book lunch requirements. Staying for lunch is optional but the majority of attendees stay to enjoy this social aspect of the group.

The walk programmes include a variety of terrains and the leaders try to minimise road walking by keeping to field and woodland footpaths/tracks. As a group we walk at a speed that reflects the general good fitness of our members and we enjoy having new members along providing they feel comfortable with our normal pace.

We, also, try to maintain a strong social element within the group by arranging a variety of events which include days out, evening events, an annual lunch and weekends away.

New walkers are very welcome to join us as guests on two or three walks, but are required to join the Ramblers if they wish to walk regularly with the group and receive our programme.

Our Walks Programme

Our walks programme is published 3 times a year.  EEF members please send an email to our Membership Secretary, Philip Heady in order to receive the programme electronically. Having your email address means you can receive updates and changes to the programme as they occur.

Shorter Walks - Saturday 3rd December 2016 and Saturday 7th January 2017

A proposal has been received to consider including a few shorter walks of 3½ - 4 miles in our future programmes.

The rationale behind the proposal is that, as some of our regular walkers are getting or have now got older, there is a good chance that they will feel unable to participate in our walks which, normally, are in the 4 – 5 mile bracket. As such, it was felt that our membership which currently support our walks may start declining. In order to encourage some of those members who cannot manage the normal length of walk to try some shorter walks, we are, as an experiment, including two shorter walks in this programme (December to March) to see what response is received.
